What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

Week of March 21, 2009 - What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

THIS WEEK'S TASTING - SATURDAY MARCH 21 - 11 am until 6 pm

We will be heading down under this Saturday. PALLISER ESTATE SAUVIGNON BLANC - $17.99 (reg. $21.99) - This wine recieved 91 points and Editor's Choice from The Wne Enthusiast saying "A smoky, slightly fume character marks the nose, then ripe peaches & nectarines wash across the palate with just enough grassiness to impart varietal character. Plump & round, it's soft & approachable without being sloppy, ending on a note of ripe tangerines."

YALUMBA "WILD FERMENT" CHARDONNAY - $16.99 (reg. $18.99) - James Halliday's Top 100 Wines - "Yalumba's chief winemaker, Louisa Rose, has spent much time in research & practical use of wild yeasts in white winemaking. A vibrant wine that shows real depth & weight. mineral complexity & fine citrus fruit yielding to notes of French oak on the finish. Drink now to 2011, great with smoked salmon." 90 points /The Wine Advocate

EARTHWORKS 'BAROSSA' SHIRAZ - $15.99 (reg $20.99) - A Barossa Valley regional blend. Sourced from growers with vineyards that range in age from 70, 50 and 35 years old with some younger hand picked parcels. The Wine Advocate says "Purple-colored, it exhibits aromas of smoke, sausage, bacon & blueberry which jumps from the glass. Medium bodied, ripe & sweet with no hard edges, this superb value can be enjoyed over the next 4 - 6 years." "90 Points/The Wine Advocate.

LONGMEIL "HANGIN' SNAKES" SHIRAZ/VIOGNIER - $18.99 (reg. $20.99) One of Langmell's best growers doesn't curse but in the heat of vintage is often heard to mutter "Hangin' Snakes" hence the homage to him. The Wine Enthusisast writes "Despite containing only 5% Viognier, this smells a bit floral & apricot-like & some may take it to task for that, but it does serve to distinguish this silky, easy-drinking wine. It has a sensational, glycerol-laden texture & finishes with lingering spice notes, so there's more to it than stone fruit & flowers. Drink now - 2010."90 Points/ The Wine Enthusiast"

SEPPELTSFIELD PARA GRAND 10 YEAR OLD TAWNEY - Introductory Price $32.99 (reg. $40.99) - Wine & Spirits Magazine says "A classic tawny blend of shiraz, grenache & mourvedre from Seppeltsfield's old stocks, this wine has a sweet fruit scent of dates & candied orange peel. Fine acidity keeps it clean & lifted." 90 points/ Wine & Spirts

FRIDAY NIGHT TASTING - FRIDAY MARCH 20 - 4:30 - 6:30 pm

CANTELE SALICE SALENTINO RISERVA - 85% Negroamaro & 15% Malvesia Nera - Negroamaro is Italy's sixth most planted vines. Although it has traditionally been used for blending, it can produce vigorous red wines worthy of ageing. Malvasia Nera is most commonly used in conjunction with other grapes: as a minority partner of Negroamaro in a standard red blend, and as a useful supplement to Sangiovese in Tuscany, where it adds both color and perfume.

COLLOSI NERO DE AVOLA - One of the best red wine grapes of Sicily, also known as Calabrese, suggesting origins in Calabria on the mainland. It has shown itself a fine candidate for barrel maturation, with fine aromas and real potential for ageing.

Stop by and try these two wines and mark them off on your journey to try 100 different varietals.
