What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

Week of June 13, 2009 - What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

THIS WEEK'S TASTING - SATURDAY JUNE 13 - 11 am until 6 pm

ADEGAS LUIS PATO Sparkling Wine Maria Gomes - $15.99 - Grown with Maria Gomes (95%) and Arinto (5%) grapes fermented in separate stainless steel vats under control temperature during two weeks. The second fermentation was made in bottle to keep the flavour of flowers and fruits from the main grape. It is a summer wine but also of conviviality. (from the Luis Pato web site)

FUZELO VINHO VERDE - $8.99 (reg. $11.99) This bright, fruit-forward white is a fun pairing for fish and white meat. A slight fizz and subtle mineral notes keep ripe melon and grapefruit notes interesting. Enjoy chilled. --------------- "This year's Vinho Verde from Fuzelo is even better than the last. The 2008 is an equal-parts blend of Trajadura and Alvarinho. Made in Moncao, Portugal, it's crisp, dry, and spritzy, with only 11% alcohol. This bright, fruit-forward white is a fun pairing for fish and white meat. A slight fizz and subtle mineral notes keep ripe melon and grapefruit notes interesting." from the Menotomy Beer & Wine Archives web site.

Cabriz Colheita Seleccionada White $10.99 (reg. $11.99) - Varieties: Malvasia Fina, Cerceal, Bical, Encruzado - A great white for summer time deck/patio parties.

Cabriz Colheita Seleccionada Tinta - $8.99 (reg. $11.99) Varieties: Alfrocheiro, Tinta-Roriz, and Touriga-Nacional -

And our final offering will be BERCO DO INFANTE RESERVE $8.99 (reg. $11.99) - My web search didn't turn up anything on the 2007 vintage but the 2005 vintage was #3 on Wine Enthusiasts Top 100 Values. From the information about the winery that came up they are producing great wines every year so this should be no exception. Join us and we will decide together.

FRIDAY NIGHT TASTING - 4:30 to 6:30

Once again a white blend will be on the tasting bar for Friday night - OAKLEY FOUR WHITES by CLINE - $8.99 - The blend is Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Palomino and Malvasia Bianca. Bright citrus and peach flavors make this wine excellent on its own or paired with seafood dishes and salads. Round up your posse, serve slightly chilled and enjoy. (back label)

And we will also offer a 2006 BONAIR CABERNET - $10.99. - This wine is a blend of new and used American and French oak barrels. It consistently wins high rankings because of its high quality to price ratio. It is probably the best bargain in Washington State Cabs and compares favorably to wines costing $20 to $30.

WHAT'S NEW?

We got in the new Shannon Martin greeting cards and cocktail napkins. Be sure to look at them when you are in. They are sure to make you laugh!

If you like the Desert Wind wines you should try the BARBERA. Another new varietal for Washington state to try their hands at.

Looking for a nice little white Burgundy (other wise known as Chardonnay)? For $16.99 we thought that the Matrot Bourgogne was a super summer wine for sharing with friends or with a crisp salad.

WHAT'S COMING UP AROUND DES MOINES?

On July 18th there are all sorts of fun activities going on around town. From the Farmers Market, Classic Car and Wooden Boat Show, even a Tall Ship will be at the Marina.

The Des Moines Rotary will be holding the first Rotary 500 Pop & Drop! This should be a fun event. You buy numbered tickets for $5.00 and on July 18th the South King County Fire District will hoist a large container filled with numbered ping pong balls at Des Moines Beach Park and let them drop at 1:00 pm. If your numbered ball is closest to the target you will win $500.00. Get your ticket from any Des Moines Rotarian or here at CorkyCellars.

CorkyCrush fun will happen on the 18th also. Right in front of the shop and before the parades you can enjoy some old fashioned stomping of the grapes. Put together a team or come down and cheer the teams on and help us raise money for the Des Moines Food Bank. You can make a pledge to a team for how much juice they produce or bring non perishable items to fill the cans.

And of course if you are looking for an evening of theater but don't relish the idea of going into Seattle then get your tickets to Breeders Theater's production of "The Last Magician". Tickets are still only $20.00 and include wine tasting, hors de ouvres and the original play by local play wright T.M. Sell.
