Week of September 26, 2009 - What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

THIS WEEK'S TASTING - SATURDAY SEPT. 26 - 11 am until 6 pm

We are excited to have Mike Libbee back from Masset Winery this week. We will be featuring: 2008 CHARDONNAY - $17.99 - Chardonnay grapes from the renowned Red Willow Vineyards in the Yakima Valley. Partial malolactic conversion provides a rich, round mouth feel followed by flavors of Maui gold pineapple and tropical fruit.

LA PETIT BLANC - $14.99 - This medium-sweet white blend of noble varietals follows in the tradition of their extremely popular Le Petit Rouge. A crisp acidity frames flavors of citrus fruit with highlights of white peach and ripe Bosc pears. Fermented in stainless steel tanks. Just 12 cases remaining.

LA PETIT ROUGE - $14.99 - best-selling winemaker's blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. This is a fruit forward, easy-sipping, everyday red. Twenty months in small oak barrels gives aromas of mocha and spice, while a combination of grapes contribute complexity.

2005 MERLOT - $15.99 (reg. $21.99) - Fruit from Red Willow, Portteus, and Elephant Mountain Vineyards. 91% Merlot, 7% Cab Franc, and 2% Cab Sauvignon. Rich and moderately full-bodied with mocha, red plum and Montmorency cherry finishing with a touch of spice and that special Cab Franc herb/lavender essence. French and Hungarian oak. 220 cases produced. The winery is ready to move to the 2006 vintage so you can take advantage of this great price!

2005 SANDRA JEAN - $29.99 (reg. $35.99) - premium blend of the winemaker’s favorite barrels. Sandra Jean is a tribute to Greg’s mother. Please savor it on a special occasion and be reminded of the people you love most. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. Another savings from the winery - take advantage of this before it disappears - only 10 cases reamain.

FRIDAY NIGHT TASTING - SEPT. 25 - 4 until 6:30 PM

We have two fun Italian wines to try this week.

If you have had the Rosa Regal Brachetta d'Acqui you know that it is a fun red bubbly. Well, we will be trying the still version of the Brachetta grape. Brachetto tend to produce light bodied, highly aromatic wines with distinctive notes of strawberries.

And, just to be on the cutting edge we found a Bonarda Frizzante. We have had Bonarda before but this should prove to be interesting and different. Bonarda is a red grape variety found mostly in the Emilia-Romagna region of central Italy and the Lombardy region of northern Italy. It has lost popularity in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Bonarda is the same as the Croatina grape used in Oltrepò Pavese and Colli Piacentini DOCs. It produces deeply-colored, full-bodied reds.

Castello Di Luzzano Banard FrizzanteTasting Notes: A red wine of good body. Bright ruby color; intense aromas of raspberry; dry palate of great elegance. It starts to show at its best in the summer folowing the harvest and retains its characteristics for at least 2-3 years. Though ideal with all types of salami and cured meats, its dry, very slightly sparkling taste makes an excellent partner right through a meal.
