What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

Week of October 10, 2009 - What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

THIS WEEK'S TASTING - SATURDAY OCT 10 - 11 am until 6 pm

We have a new winery for us this week to share with you - TERTULIA CELLARS - Tertulia is a Spanish word meaning "a social gathering of friends." The lineup will be: VIOGNIER - $19.99 - On the first whiff intense mineral notes appear, transitioning into delicate floral notes of lavender and fruit aromatics of green apple and fresh pineapple. As the wine opens the aromas develop a rich nutty character. On the palate integrated acids give way to a nice viscous mouth feel.

ROSE DU MOURVEDRE - $16.99 - This wine has aromas of creme brulee, strawberry rhubarb , and ruby red grapefruit juice. Nice bright acidity transforms into a creamy mouth feel on the finish.

HORSE HEAVEN HILLS CABERNET - $34.99 - On the nose the Cabernet starts with oak notes of tobacco, earth and vanilla, transforming into dark berry aromas of cherries and cassis. On the mouth sits an elegant wine, balanced finishing with smooth integrated tannins.

SOBRA - $24.99 - (Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot) Mineral notes of wet stone first hit the nose followed by caramel and coffee grounds. Next berry aromas of black currant and dark cherries transform into eucalyptus. On the palate firm tannins evolve into a long smooth finish. As this wine is unfined and unfiltered, the winemaker recommends standing the bottle upright for a few hours before opening, preferably one day prior to opening. Some sediment may form in the bottle as it continues to age. Decanting is recommended.

And to finish off:

LES COLLINES SYRAH - $30.99 - (90%Syrah, 5% Grenache, 5% Tempranillo) The first whiff of this wine brings on aromatics of blue berry preserves and black berries, followed by scents of violets, rosemary and sage. The nose finishes with smoked game. On the palate, balanced acidity gives way to velvery tannins and a smooth finish.

PEPPER BRIDGE MERLOT - $32.99 - The first whiffs of this elegant Merlot start with dark cherries and wet stones, followed by fresh mint and red currant. On the mouth a big palate packed with tannins transforms into a smooth lingering finish. This wine will be well rewarded by additional cellaring for the next 5 - 7 years, picking up a beautiful bouquet in bottle. This wine is also unfined and unfiltered so allowing to stand for a day and decanting is recommended.
