What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

Week of April 10, 2010 - What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

THIS WEEK'S TASTING - SAT. APRIL 10 - 11 AM until 6 PM

INAMA VIN SOAVE - $15.99 (reg. $17.99) Soave is the region that this wine comes from. The grape used is 100% Garganega. Light yellow colour. Elegant nose of sweet field flowers: camomile, elder flower, iris. Pleasant on the palate with sweet almond on the finish. Recommended combinations: Aperitif, delicate dishes, salads and white fish.

ZENATO LUGANA - $14.99 (reg $17.99) This Lugana is sourced from our estate vineyards in San Benedetto, a village just south of Lake Garda, between the towns of Desenzano and Peschiera del Garda. We utilise a careful blend of the best grapes from lugana-variety vineyards in the historic heart of the DOC zone. It is a wine of appealing distinctiveness, releasing crisp, fruity aromas that gradually expand to a rich complexity characteristic only of Lugana. The palate is rounded and generous, and has a wonderfully long, savoury finish.

ZENATO VALPOLICELLA - $14.99 (reg $15.99) Produced from vineyards in the historic zone in the commune of Sant’Ambrogio, from 85% corvina, 10% rondinella, and 5% sangiovese. Production is traditional. The grapes are de-stemmed and lightly crushed, followed by a 6-7 day maceration on the skins. The wine is kept in steel until malolactic fermentation, followed by 12 months’ maturation in 33- and 55-hl Slavonian oak barrels. The nose offers supple fragrances of almonds and violets. Crisp and dry in the mouth, well structured, with a lovely, velvety texture. Ready to enjoy now, but can be cellared a few years.

ALLEGRINI PALAZZO DELLA TORRE - $20.99 (reg. $23.99) This wine is produced using an innovative RIPASSO method. Well-structured, smooth and rounded, this wine is characterised by a long, elegant finish. Deep ruby red in colour, it has a delicious wild berry perfume, with flavour of raisins. The grapes Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and Sangiovese from the Palazzo della Torre vineyard follow two different paths: 70 % of the grapes are vinified immediately after the harvest, the remaining percentage is dried until the end of December. At this point, the wine ferments again with the dried grapes. This wine will age easily for 8 - 10 years. Palazzo della Torre is great with a wide range of risotti (particularly with pork), mixed grilled meats, roasts and the traditional Veneto boiler meats bollito misto. Serve at 16-18 C (61-64 F) and open the bottle an hour before drinking.

SARACCO MOSCATO D'ASTI - $16.99 (reg $18.99) Perfume of fresh peach, pear and aromatic white flowers. A gentle sperkle brightens the friut and a tingle of sweetness hints of candidied friuts. This wine is perfect as refreshing aperitif or a light finish to a meal. Saracco has perfected the balance of acid and residual sugar to make an incredibly light and floral sperkling wine

FRIDAY NIGHT TASTING - APRIL 9 - 4 until 6:30 PM

This week for our two new varietals we have an Austrian St. Laurent and a French Fer Servardou. .

ZANTHO BURGENLAND ST. LAURENT - $15.99 - Enjoy Pinot Noir? Then you must try this similar, some say related, finesse style wine. Zantho's St. Laurent is a dark ruby red with purple highlights and light cinnamon spice on the nose. Sour cherry and intense blackberry fruit on the palate is paired with compact tannins and a matching acidity, making for a subltly complex wine.

DOMAINE DU CROS MARCILLAC - Marcillac is a small appellation that lies east of Cahors. The appellation is dominated by red wine, and these wines must contain at least 80% of the local variety Fer Servadou (aka Mansois, Braucol). The Domaine du Cros "Cuvee Vielles Vignes" exhibits a vegetal nose, with white pepper, blackberry fruit, meat, old leather, damp forest undergrowth and tarry/smokey aromas as well. Extremely impressive on the palate - beautifully textured with a soft, velvety mouthfeel and good acidity, an incredibly long finish.

Stop by and experience a couple of new wines and, if you are keeping track, you can mark off on your goal of tasting 100 different varietals.
