What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

Week of April 17, 2010 - What's Happening at CorkyCellars?

THIS WEEK'S TASTING - SAT. APRIL 17 - 11 am until 6 pm

This week we are kicking off Earth Week by featuring PARDUCCI WINE CELLARS and PAUL DOLAN VINEYARDS from Ukiah California. Parducci is America's greenest winery > locally owned and operated > grapes from family farms > sustainable farming practices > 100% Green Power > earth friendly packaging > 1st U.S. carbon neutral winery. For each bottle of wine sold during April Parducci will donate $1 to American Forests and they will plant a minimum of one tree. Paul Dolan is an organic and biodynamic winery. His website is very interesting and informational about biodynamic farming.

We will have PARDUCCI SUSTAINABLE WHITE AND PARDUCCI SUSTAINABLE RED - $9.99 each (reg. $12.99) - Sustainable White - crisp, clean aromas and flavors of citrus and melon. A refreshing, crowd-pleasing wine! Enjoy this white wine with fresh salads, free-range chicken, and organic vegetable dishes. Sustainable Red - has berry fruit flavors and spicy complexities. Enjoy this robust dry red wine with pasta, pizza, and flavorful cheeses.

PARDUCCI CHARDONNAY - $10.99 (reg. $13.99) crisp, clean aromas and flavors of apple, melon, and citrus . Enjoy this rich, dry white wine with salmon, chicken, creamy soups, and white-sauced pasta.

PAUL DOLAN CABERNET - $21.99 (reg. $26.99) - This full-flavored wine shows the intensity of its red soil roots. It is ripe and plummy, with intriguing notes of anise and brown spice, and the structure to age five years or more from the vintage.

TRUE GRIT PETITE SIRAH - $21.99 - Brash when young, but worth waiting for--True Grit mellows with age. Heady aromas of ripe fruit, white pepper and vanilla followed by an intense rush of fresh blackberry, dark chocolate, pepper and caramel flavors. True Grit is big, but can dance lightly in both familiar and exotic menu settings. Try it with seared steak, shrimp with black pepper pasta, cold lamb salad, or salmon with raspberry sauce.

FRIDAY NIGHT TASTING - APRIL 16 - 4pm until 6:30 pm

Once again a distributor brougt by a varietal that we had not heard of before. In 1961 two agriculture researchers crossed Cabernet and Grenache and named the new hybrid MARSELAN. In 1971 the new grape was recognized by the INAO in France. (This is the group that governs wine and cheese making.) Growers snubbed their noses at it for about 30 years because it didn't grow the heavy crops they wanted. Marselan was named after Marseillan, the small town on France's Mediterranean coast where it was first grown. It has been garnering attention for the past few years in the European market from producers and consumers alike.

The MARSELAN we will be tasting is from DOMAINE de COURON. The winery is in the Cotes du Rhone area of France in the village of Saint Marcel d'Ardeche, 45 miles northwest of Avignon.

Also we will have a Portugese wine by QUINTA DO FEITAL ALVARINHO/TRAJADURA "AURATUS".

Trajadura Grape Information: Portuguese varietal that is usually included in the wines of Vinho Verde in the eastern corner of the Iberian peninsula. Vinho Verde is often light and citrusy with a slight frizzante feel due to the high levels of acidity when the wines are young. Trajadura has a certain plush character, yet only when compared to its super acidic blending partners of Loureira and Alvarinho (Albariņo). Across the border in Galicia it is known as Treixadura and is often used to soften the wines of Ribiero and Rueda. Alvarinho Grape Information: An old grape variety of exceptional quality, deservedly famed for the varietal wines it produces in the Vinho Verde region. Alvarinho has a highly characteristic floral and fruity profile with notes of lime tree, balm mint, honeysuckle, peach, grapefruit and apple, all well-married with the high acidity typical of crisp white wines from north-west Portugal. The grapes yield balanced wines with good structure and alcohol levels.
